Free Tax Preparation

Below are two options for free tax preparation.

1. If you had a household income of $49,000 or less in 2009, you may qualify for free tax preparation at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. Having your taxes prepared by an IRS certified volunteer ensures that you claim all of your eligible tax credits and receive a quick refund in as little as 7-10 days with free e-file and direct deposit. Locations will open and begin providing this free service in mid-January. To find the nearest free tax preparation site and to learn what to bring with you when you go, please dial 2-1-1 or 269-4357. Sites are available throughout Middle Tennessee.

2. Thanks to a grant, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville is able to offer free online, do-it-yourself tax preparation. If you feel comfortable navigating the internet and had a household income of $58,000 or less in 2009, then you can prepare and file your taxes online for free using a user-friendly, guided program called The Beehive. Just go to: www.MyMoneyNashville.org and click on the “File Online Today” link.

I encourage you to use these services if you qualify. These services are brought to you by United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and the Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence. ◦
