The drain in our shower has been draining slowly for a week or so. It drained, but slowly, which means a ring would develop around the tub and I had clean it way too often. Today after cleaning it, again, I decided that I was going to fix it myself! I went for the cabinet for Drano, but we didn't have it. Now, I probably should have just gone to the store at that point, but well, I was still in my pajamas. So, I turned to my friend Google for help. I found several articles that stated pouring boiling water down the drain would solve many clogs, so I decided to give it a try. While boiling the huge pot of water I got a screw driver and removed the drain cover. Once the water was boiling rapidly I poured it down the drain. I huge hairball bubbled to the surface and I was able to just pull it out (keep in mind I was wearing rubber cleaning gloves that went to my elbows!). The article I read also recommended using a plunger, so I did that too! When I was finished I poured in another huge pot of boiling water, and I'm happy to report that it drained quickly.
Next time I'm at the store I will pick up some Drano to keep incase of emergency, but I'm happy to report that today I was able to clear the clogged drain without spending any money.
Have you found any tips to reduce your household expenses? If so, I'd love to hear them. I have a few frugal friends that make their own household cleaners as well as other household products. If you have any money saving tips you would like me to blog about just send me an email. Be sure to include your name so I can give you credit for the suggestion. ◦

Wow! I'm so proud of you! I would have made Bill do it. But I'm glad you found a "non-chemical" way to clear a drain.
