Free Easter Egg Hunt

I realize I've been slow to post deals lately.  It is because I have two weeks of papers unopened in my kitchen.  I haven't even taken them out of the plastic, much less cut the coupons.  I'll catch up soon.  In the meantime, I want to tell you about a wonderful and free Easter Egg Hunt this weekend.  On Saturday, April 3 from 10:00 - 2:00 children and families are invited to the Al Menah Shrine Temple for an Easter Celebration and Egg Hunt.  They are located at 1354 Brick Church Pike in Nashville. Last year there was a cake walk, face paintings, inflatables, and motorcycle rides.  That was in addition the actual egg hunt.

If I Only Had $5...

Someone asked me tonight how to build a stockpile on a limited budget.  That got me thinking....if I only had $5 to spend on groceries, what would I buy?  Here is what I came up with.

Publix

I would buy 4 boxes of  Ronzoni pasta .70 cents each. - I would print this coupon twice for a final price of .20 cents per box!

I would buy two Classico Pasta Sauces $1.45 - use this $1/2 coupon for a final price of .95 cents each. Also, I would  buy a small package of hamburger meat (approx. $1.50) and use the "$1.50 off meat when you buy 2 Classico Pasta" coupon from the 3/14 paper. You should be able to get both jars of pasta sauce and a small package of meat for around $2.

I would also buy Birds Eye frozen vegetables (as many as I have coupons). The price is not listed in the ad, but it should be less than $1 per bag. If you use the .50 cent coupon from the 3/21 paper the cost should be FREE!

My total out of pocket would be approximately $4.   If you are cooking for only one or two people, this will make enough pasta for a week, and leave you with at least 2, probably 3 boxes of unopened pasta to be used later.

Remember, it takes time to build a stockpile.  Regardless of your budget you can do it!

Cheap Monopoly and Connect 4!!

This week at Target Monopoly and Connect 4 games are on sale for $7.  In todays paper there is a $5 off Monopoly coupon and a $4 off Connect 4 coupon.  If you didn't get a paper, or if you need additional coupons, you can print them here.   If you already have these games, they would make a great addition to your gift closet (you have one, don't you?) or you can put these aside to support organizations like Toys 4 Tots or the Salvation Army later this year.

Remember, Walmart will price match.  I purchased the Monopoly game at Walmart this morning for $2 (it was marked $12).  You just need to bring in your Target ad and request a price match.

Restaurant.com 70% Off

Have you heard of http://www.restaurant.com//? The site allows you to purchase $25 gift certificates for $10, and $10 gift certificates for $4 to be used at participating restaurants. They are currently offering a 70% discount (in addition to the regular discount price) on certificates. Just use discount code LUCKY at checkout and you can get a $25 gift certificate for $3!!!!! This offer is valid through 3/22, so don't wait.

I've had a few people email me to ask exactly how this works. It is best to think of the certificate as a coupon because a minimum purchase is required. It can vary by restaurant, but generally you can use a $25 certificate on a $35 purchase, which is a significant savings. Click here for FAQs.

**Disclaimer: You should call the restaurant ahead of time to make sure they accept the certificates before purchasing. ◦

Frugal Home Repairs

Those of you that know me well will undoubtedly get a good chuckle from this post because if you know me well you know that I'm not a "fix-it" kind of gal.  I leave home repairs to my husband or my children, because even my children are more qualified than I am to tackle a repair project.

The drain in our shower has been draining slowly for a week or so.  It drained, but slowly, which means a ring would develop around the tub and I had clean it way too often.  Today after cleaning it, again, I decided that I was going to fix it myself!  I went for the cabinet for Drano, but we didn't have it.  Now, I probably should have just gone to the store at that point, but well, I was still in my pajamas.  So, I turned to my friend Google for help.  I found several articles that stated pouring boiling water down the drain would solve many clogs, so I decided to give it a try.  While boiling the huge pot of water I got a screw driver and removed the drain cover.  Once the water was boiling rapidly I poured it down the drain.  I huge hairball bubbled to the surface and I was able to just pull it out (keep in mind I was wearing rubber cleaning gloves that went to my elbows!).  The article I read also recommended using a plunger, so I did that too!  When I was finished I poured in another huge pot of boiling water, and I'm happy to report that it drained quickly.

Next time I'm at the store I will pick up some Drano to keep incase of emergency, but I'm happy to report that today I was able to clear the clogged drain without spending any money.

Have you found any tips to reduce your household expenses?  If so, I'd love to hear them.  I have a few frugal friends that make their own household cleaners as well as other household products.  If you have any money saving tips you would like me to blog about just send me an email.  Be sure to include your name so I can give you credit for the suggestion. ◦

More on the Kmart Coupon

The  Kmart coupon is valid.  Kmart issued the coupon yesterday via email to certain markets and included the link to the coupon, which anyone could print because it is hosted on their website.  The coupon clearly says that it is valid at all kmart stores.  However, I'm hearing that some stores are refusing to honor it simply because it makes for such a great deal.  I guess it is similar to the KFC free grilled chicken meal a few years ago.  Once everyone found out about it they had to rescind the offer to keep from losing millions of dollars.  I personally printed one coupon (I happen to think printing several is bordering on coupon fraud) and I will attempt to use it soon at a middle Tennessee store.  I'll let  you know how it goes. ◦

Don't Wait... Print This NOW!

I don't normally post deals until I have confirmed them, but despite my efforts, I can't get an answer on this.  I've read on a couple blogs about a $10 Kmart coupon that is valid with a $20 purchase.  It seems too good to be true, especially with the rumor that Kmart stores will double coupons up to and including $2 the week of April 4.  The link and bar code appear to be valid.  To double check I called Kmart customer service.  The lady I spoke to said that she could not verify coupons because they did not receive that information.  She suggested that I print the coupon and simply try to use it at the store.  So, here it is.  Don't use it yet.  Wait and see if your local store is doubling coupons on April 4.  Middle Tennessee stores were on the list I reviewed a few weeks ago, but that is always subject to change.

Paying Cash for Big Purchases

We do not use credit cards.  The only exception is when I book travel.  That is because my credit card offers additional protections when hotel and airfare are booked.  However, I do not book the hotel or airfare until I have the money to pay the entire amount.

I'm not sharing this to brag, or to make anyone feel bad about using credit cards.  I'm sharing this personal information because I've had a few people ask me lately how I'm able to pay cash for large purchases.  The answer is simple: I just don't buy things until I'm able to pay for them.   I realize that is easier said than done.  And for those of you that currently have credit card debt, I am definitely not judging.  When you are at a place that you can work on paying it off, I recommend Dave Ramsey.  His baby steps make the process do-able.  I also realize sometimes in life people are faced with emergencies that require the use of credit cards.  I get it.  However, for those of you that are not currently in crisis mode, I hope this information will be helpful.

About 10 years ago I made my last car payment to a lender.  Once it was made, I opened a separate bank account and set up an automatic transfer to pay $300 per month into my "car account".  It was roughly the same amount I'd been spending per month, only I was paying it into my car fund instead of to a lender.  I drove my paid off car for about 4 more years (paying a few repair bills along the way) and eventually I was able to purchase a newer car.  It was about 2 years old, but was nicer and more dependable than what I'd been driving.

I've done the same with vacations.  By simply calculating the cost and determining how much I can afford to save per month, I've been able to plan for and pay cash for vacations.  Now, keep in mind there have been many years that we did not take a vacation, but trust me, it has been worth it.  Vacations are just more relaxing when you know they are paid for!

Do you have any tips to share?  If so, I'd LOVE to hear them.  I learn so much from my fellow bloggers and money saving friends.  Please keep the email tips coming! ◦

Frugal Vacations

How do you save money when on vacation?  Of course there are obvious ways like packing snacks and food, or using the coupons in the hotel room, but what else do you do to save?

I recently took a trip with my sister and four children to a water park for 2 nights and 2 days.  We spent less than $400 for the entire trip, including $50 for gas.  We were able to use hotel reward points to get one night free.  We also packed a cooler with food, bread, and snacks that could be heated up in the microwave (such as Kraft mac-n-cheese cups).  We could have spent less, but we wanted to eat out once a day.  Honestly, it would have been a hassle to eat out more than that.  It was nice to be able to run to the room and eat instead of drying off, changing clothes, and driving somewhere.  Another way we saved was by staying in the same room.  Instead of booking separate rooms, we booked a room that would sleep six.  It was actually nicer this way because when one of us needed to shower or take a nap the other could watch the children.  Of course, the children loved it because it was like a sleep over.

I'm sure my super smart readers have tricks that I've never thought of. So, share them with me!  You can email me, or leave a comment. ◦

Budgeting

I have learned that one of the best ways to save money is to have, and use, a budget.  Within a few months of having a budget and keeping track of our spending in each category I was shocked to find that money was being...well...wasted!  I say wasted because I found that I was spending too much in some categories.  By determining exactly where the money was going I was able to come up with a plan to reduce spending.  As an example, we used to spend way too much going out to eat.  I realized that by menu planning we are not nearly as tempted to go out or pick something up on the way home because I know what was for dinner, and I know I have the ingredients on hand.  I also realized that I needed to reduce our medical costs.  You can read my post here about ways to reduce medical expenses.  Budgeting and expense tracking helped Tara to realize that she was spending too much on utilities and trash pickup, so she looked for ways to reduce those expenses.  You can read her posts here and here.

When I began budgeting I struggled with a way to budget for expenses that aren't paid on a monthly basis.  For example, I pay our auto insurance every six month.  To keep things simple, I came up with the per-month cost and in addition to our regular savings, I deposit that amount into our savings account each month.  When the bill comes in the mail I do not have to worry about having the money.  I simply transfer that amount into my checking account and pay the bill.

Have you found any tips that help you with your monthly budget?  If so, I'd love to hear them! ◦
